Custom Mugs & Tumblers: How to Own Your Client's Desk Every Morning

The first coffee, a meeting or an afternoon tea: custom mugs and thermal tumblers can become part of the small rituals repeated throughout the working day.

At your desk or on the go: drinkware for every routine.

For purchasing teams, marketing departments and office managers, value comes from choosing something people genuinely find comfortable to use. A mug left in a cupboard achieves little; one that becomes part of a daily routine offers regular opportunities to remember your brand.

Before comparing finishes, consider where people will drink their coffee, who will wash the item and whether it will travel in a backpack. These three questions help balance budget, durability and the user experience.

01 · Start with the routine

Ceramic or stainless steel: which should you choose?

DESK / STAFF KITCHEN

Ceramic mugs: a familiar coffee break

Branded office mugs suit permanent desks, meeting rooms and staff kitchens. Their familiar feel and comfortable handle encourage everyday use. They also work well in welcome packs when employees have somewhere to store them.

Custom ceramic mugs offer an attractive surface for logos and full-colour designs. They are often cost-effective for bulk orders, although the price depends on the model and decoration. Allow for possible breakages and check the height and capacity against the coffee machines in your workplace.

COMMUTING / HYBRID WORK

Stainless steel: ready to go

Travel tumblers and branded vacuum flasks suit sales teams, hybrid workers and days away from the office. Steel provides strength, but the material alone does not guarantee insulation or a leakproof seal.

For carrying a drink inside a bag, choose a closure the manufacturer explicitly describes as leakproof. A splash-resistant lid helps when walking between meetings, but may leak if the tumbler tips over. Also check the opening, how easily the seals can be cleaned and whether it fits a cup holder.

Single wall, double wall and vacuum: the difference is inside

A single wall separates the drink from the outside without an insulating chamber. A double wall introduces a gap that reduces heat transfer; when that gap is vacuum-insulated, it particularly limits conduction and convection between the walls. Two steel tumblers that look similar can therefore perform very differently.

What to check before choosing
ConstructionPractical useKey point
BPA-free reusable plasticLightweight, for short journeys.Check suitability for hot drinks and the maximum temperature.
Single-wall steelA sturdy container for drinks consumed soon after pouring.Does not provide the insulation of a vacuum model.
Double wall without vacuumGreater separation between the drink and the outside.Performance depends on the design and lid.
Vacuum-insulated double wallKeeps drinks at temperature for longer.Check the model's stated duration and test conditions.

Claims of six hours hot or twelve hours cold should only be used when documented for the chosen item. Starting temperature, fill level and how often it is opened affect the result. Likewise, “BPA-free” alone does not establish the container's overall suitability: request the instructions for use and food-contact documentation.

02 · Fewer disposables, more reuse

Takeaway cups and options for a more sustainable office

Replacing single-use cups takes more than handing out a gift. Provide somewhere to wash and store the drinkware, along with access to water. Making it easy to use helps the habit stick and can reduce recurring purchases of disposables.

Plant fibres: check the composition

Searches for eco-friendly office mugs often include bamboo or wheat straw. However, the material's name does not prove that a cup is recyclable, compostable or suitable for hot coffee.

The European Commission warns about the illegal sale of plastic food-contact articles containing bamboo and other unauthorised plant-based additives. A solid bamboo lid is different from plastic with added fibres. Before choosing a model, check its composition, intended use and compliance; avoid unsupported environmental claims.

Silicone or bamboo lids

A lid can protect a drink and reduce splashes when moving between offices. Silicone offers flexibility; bamboo provides a warm-looking finish. Whether it is leakproof depends on the lid, seal and closure working together, rather than on appearance.

Check how each part comes apart and whether it is dishwasher-safe. If the manufacturer specifies hand washing, include that information when distributing the item. An easy-to-maintain product with replaceable seals, where available, can stay in use for longer.

To support a zero-waste culture, track straightforward figures: disposable units bought before and after, employee participation and replacements needed. Improvement depends on actual reuse and maintenance; no material automatically makes a campaign sustainable.

03 · A recognisable identity

Decoration techniques for drinkware

Choose the technique according to the material, design complexity and quantity. A readable logo positioned where it remains visible while the item is held usually works better than trying to fill every available space.

LOGOS IN A FEW COLOURS

Rotary screen printing and pad printing

These are common choices for one- or two-colour branding. Rotary screen printing can cover part of the body on compatible models; pad printing suits certain smaller or curved areas. Cost depends on colours, positions, setup and quantity. Confirm the printable area and the contrast against the container's colour.

PHOTOS AND GRADIENTS

Sublimation

This reproduces images and gradients on ceramic prepared with a special coating. It works well for visual campaigns and wraparound artwork. A design described as 360° may still have margins and unprinted areas near the handle: request the exact template and approve a proof before production.

AN UNDERSTATED METAL FINISH

Laser engraving

This provides a durable, elegant mark on suitable steel tumblers and flasks. The result depends on the metal and coating; it does not necessarily reproduce brand colours. Although it stands up well to use, it does not make the whole item indestructible. Review a sample and the cleaning instructions for your chosen finish.

For every technique, supply the logo in the requested format, specify its size and position, and check the final artwork. If you need individual names, mention this when requesting a quote: it may change the process, cost and production time.

04 · From idea to order

Getting your corporate order right

Plan your corporate drinkware around different user needs. You can choose ceramic for the office and vacuum tumblers for travellers while keeping a consistent visual identity. This matches spending to real requirements without expecting a single item to cover every situation.

  • Set quantities and capacity: allow for new starters and planned replacements.
  • Check everyday use: coffee machines, cup holders, transport and washing arrangements.
  • Finalise the branding: technique, colours, positions and sample approval.
  • Calculate the full cost: product, decoration, setup, packaging, delivery and taxes.
  • Plan the delivery: confirm stock and lead times before announcing the campaign.

If the order will supply several sites, first test a sample with people representing the different uses. Ask them to assess grip, weight, drinking comfort and ease of cleaning. Also check that the logo is readable on the actual finish and that the packaging protects the item during distribution. This review highlights details a photograph cannot show and helps refine the order before every unit is personalised.

Make room for your brand

The next coffee could carry your logo

A well-chosen branded mug or thermal tumbler combines usefulness with an everyday presence. When it actually replaces a disposable, it also helps reduce office waste.
